Arhat Temple in Chongqing

The most popular place in Chongqing must be Jiefangbei, which is the center of Chongqing and shopping malls gather here. The temple which called Arhat Temple is not far from Jiefangbei. The movie—The Crazy Stone is filmed there.

Arhat Temple is one of the key Buddhists temples and also Chongqing Buddhism Association has been set up here.According to the records, Arhat Temple was built in North Song Dynasty (1064--1067 years), formerly known as Zhiping Temple. The temple was built because of Arhat Cave. The book—Sichuan Interest Note which indicates ”Zhiping Temple…………has Arhat and Xiantian Caves, both are ancient caves” There is an ancient Buddha rock in Arhat Temple whose height is more than 20 meters. Also there are more than 400 Mo Yan Song statue, which include the Buddha which commonly known as "Sleeping Buddha", Kuan Yin Statue and so on.

In 1752, the front hall was collapsed and then rebuilt the Dragon Shrines which changed to Arhat Temple and ancient Buddha Rock. In 1885, Monk Longfa rebuilt this temple which imitated the Baoguang Temple and renamed it to Arhat Temple. It was blew up by Japanese aircrafts in 1942 and then restored. After the Great Proletarian Culture Revolution, the Arhat statues was all destroyed. In 1984, the government earmarked remodeling.

The Great Buddhas Hall was rebuilt when we came there.There are many art treasures in the palace, such as the 16 Mahakasyapa Statues and the statue of holy triad of west and so on. There are many tripitaka, Sanskrit and Tibetan sutra in the scriptorium, and together with other ancient books and paintings of Tang and Ming Dynasty.

There are 524 statues in Arhat Temple and all are clay figures. The style is exquisite and many devotees come here to pray.Arhat Temple is just like a pure land and also become a paradise for resting heart.A girl went here to looking for a pure land and prayed devoutly.
