There are many beautiful ancient towns in China, here I list the top ten.

NO.1 Danba Tibetan Villages

Danba County locates in the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in western Sichuan and, where mainly inhabited by 15 ethnics Tibetans altogether 5.7 million people. Danba County is the headwater of Shizha River Yak River, the Jinchuan River. It is called "The city on the huge rock" and "No.1 city near Dadu River". There are hills, lakes, rivers and forests here. The place hides in a deep and hard-finding place, which is a little-known paradise in the magnificent fascinating, mysterious beauty, infinite valley, local residential areas as quiet poetic life, a unique ancient stone towers, and colorful style. This is the amazing and beautiful thing of Danba Tibetan villages.


No.2  Huang Yao Ancient Town

Locating in Shaoping county of Guangxi province, Huang Yao is an Ancient town with a history of 900 years. It is know as "dream home". Huang Yao town originated from the Song Dynasty. General Yang Wenguang led his troops into Zhaoping, passing here and knowing that the local man’s surnamed Huang and Yao mostly. So he named the small town "Huang Yao”, which has been used for thousands of years. Huang Yao is the first old town in Guangxi, with thick cultural tradition. It delicates as like a southern town, quiet, elegant and simple Huang Yao was a poetic place. You can walk slowly along the stone road in every attraction; perhaps unwittingly you may find something that makes you pleasantly surprised.


No.3  Wuyuan

Beautiful mountains and water, the layers of terraced fields, are the main characteristics of Wuyuan. The four seasons have different feature, especially in spring and autumn. All the mountain would become red because the maple leaves. Exposure such a view, you feel relaxed, happy and unforgettable. The people are simple and nice here. A lot of interests are full of all over the county, which including the Ming Qing Dynasty buildings, the garden view. All and all just like a painting.



No.4  Wuzhen

Wuzhen is one of the six water towns of southern cities. The residential houses are built along the riverside. There are lots of Ming and Qing Dynasties architectures on the both sides of the road, with the bridge, water and old house. What beautiful scenery here! In the east of the town, Lizhi Academy locates there, which is the school when a great writer Mao Dun studied before. Nowadays, it turns to Mao Dun Memorial Hall. Xi Shan Old Street is one of the best preserved buildings of Ming and Qing dynasties.



No.5  Tong Li Ancient Town

Tong Li Ancient Town, Locating in Wujiang city, near Taihu Lake, apart from Suzhou City about 18 km, and 80 km away from Shanghai. It is one of the six famous water towns in southern cities with a history of more than one thousand years. There are hundreds of gardens, temples and former residences of celebrities there. It is made up from 15 rivers, 7 islands and 49 old bridges. It is called the “Oriental Venice” as its beauty with a strong natural and cultural atmosphere.



No.6  Xitang

Locating in Jiashan County, Jiaxing city, 11 kilometers away from the Jiashan city, Xitang is ancient town. It is different from other ancient towns because the streets have corridors with sheds above, total length of nearly 1000 meters, just like the corridor of Summer Palace. Xitang is known for its numerous bridges and sheds. The people are simple and nice here. It’s a good place to research Chinese traditional culture. It’s also a good background for artist. It’s unique cultural character attracts the people from all over the world.



No.7  Zhouzhuang

Locating among Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, surrounded by water, right close to each other, by vessels, Zhouzhuang has a lot of elements: rivers, streets, bridges, water, gardens, pavilions and people. It is an old city with more than one thousand history.

No.8  Tu Wa Village

During sunset, the cabin in Tu Wa village, sharp and Swiss-style, reflects the warm golden light. The pine trees next to the cabin scattered, tall and straight. The white birches stand among the pine trees. It is outstanding because of its snow-white branch, and the crown of the tree, just like a big umbrella. Behind the tree, it is the Youyi Mountain on the border of China and Russia. Tu Wa is a long shape village. The cabins are quadrate. Looked from a distance, the surrounding mountains just like a big hands, which to protect the all the village.

No.9 Chikan Ancient Town


Locating in the middle of Kaiping city, about 12 km away from the downtown, with a history of more than 350 years, Chikan ancient town is a city with a rich and deep southern culture and famous hometown of overseas Chinese. In the city there are a lot of buildings with the characteristics of Chinese and Western. The town is built along the Tan River. The village is in the south. The town is in the north. There are sotto porticos and a great number of foreign buildings. When you walk on the old street, it seems that the time dates back to the 1980s. There are towers in the town. The famous Guanzu, library, tixi Road and towers are the sign of Chikan ancient town, which have been identified as the cultural protection unit by government.



No.10  Changting County

At the border of Fujian, Guangdong and Jiangxi provinces border, Changting, as the capital of the Hakka, is the birthplace of the Neolithic culture in Fujian, is also the important part of the economic zone. As the famous old revolutionary base areas and national historic and cultural city, Changting also is called “One of Chinas most beautiful mountain city". It is the combination of cultural landscape and the natural landscape. According to the expert said, from Eastern Han Dynasty, thousands of Chinese escaped the fight of the Central Plains. So they migrated to the south. After a long period they arrived in Changting, which is hidden in mountains. They multiplied and lived here and gradually created a Chinese Han ethnic people in a unique-Hakka.
