Xijiang Miao Village, an open-air museum

Xijiang Miao Village in northeast of Leishan, Guizhou Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, is connected by more than ten natural hillside villages, which is the largest Miao village in China.

The crystal-clear Baishuihe River runs through the village, the industrious and brave Miao fellow here get up at sunrise, and return at sunset. At the upstream there is a large terrace, forming a strong farming culture and the beautiful countryside scenery.

Miao residents living here take full advantage of such topographical features and build a unique houses on the hillside. Thousands of houses on the hillside ups and downs with the topography, very magnificent.

Xijiang Miao Village is a typical open-air museum and famous for its large and rich content. The original ecology of the Miao culture has been well preserved, of course, it is the best place for sight seeing and studying the traditional Miao culture.

We lived in a Miao hostel on the hillside. Open the window, we can see the spectacular panoramic views of the village.


We lived on the third floor of "Zhuyuan Miaojia". 


Soon the night fell, though there was no city neon light, the bits and pieces of lights there were also charming.

The host invited us to their family gatherings.

This may be a must thing for such party, the degree of grain wine is about 30 degree, everyone has to drink at least a cup of such wine, starting from the elders, singing while blowing reed, very bustling. Unlucky, we were drunk that day.

There is a large terraces upstream region of Miao village, forming a strong farming culture and the beautiful rural scenery.


Overlooking the panoramic scenic, the entrance is the best location.


This barn lantern is a major feature of the Xijiang River.

In addition to houses on stilts, the Fengyu Bridge is also one of the important buildings in Xijiang Miao Village. For the sake of improving villagers’ living conditions and convenient, most of Miao villages build Fengyu Bridge near their villages to prevent the wind and the storm.

This comb on the head is quite distinctive, also known as "flower comb Miao", it is also very characteristic to carry child in backpack.

Northeast of the mountain is much more soothing, row upon row of houses on stilts built on mountains along the undulating terrain presents a variety of changes.

The traditional handicraft—batik, and the raw materials is the Isatidis.

The Drum Learder is responsible for worship activities, while the Labor Leader takes care of the arrangement of agricultural production.

The Drum Learder and the Labor Leader are hereditary, and other leaders are generally elected by the people.

Xijiang Miao people wore black robes, black turban, and black veil in the past, so called "Black Miao", also known as "skirt Miao".
